What are we picking today

News from the Huebner Berry Patch

Hope everyone survived our historic winter storm. We are still farming and very ready for Spring! Our NWS certified weather station here on the farm recorded a low of Minus 1 (-1) on Tuesday morning, Feb. 16 with 5 ½ inches of snow & sleet, followed by freezing rain and ice the next day.

Needless to say, we have had a good number of chill hours, a total of 1152 hours. Our average is 800 hours. However we are still short on rainfall.

As far as our fruit crops, we will need to monitor the blackberries, peaches and plums for the next few weeks for any possible cold damage. The Blackberries were still dormant, and hopefully didn't suffer much bud damage. Except for a few early varieties, most of our peach trees were still dormant. Again, however, we are concerned about bud damage.

We are still planting a few peach and plum trees; and will start pruning the mature peach & plum trees next week.

Depending on weather … blackberry picking should start about the end of May; Early to mid June for peaches.
