what are we picking today

News from The Berry Patch

April 3, 2022

What a wild Spring so far! Hopefully you have been able to deal with our wild weather events. We were fortunate to have missed the tornadoes … and pray for a quick recovery for those folks that were affected.

Temperatures in February and March were well below normal, as well as lower than normal rainfall. At the end of February, our weather station had recorded 991 chill hours. Our berries needed 500 hours and the peaches needed 800 hours. We did very well on chill hours. Thankfully we had some much-needed rainfall in late March, but things are already getting dry due to the winds.

However with the cool temps and lack of rain, the majority of our berries and peaches are about two weeks later than last year in leafing out and blooming. We do have a few varieties of peaches, such as TexRoyal, TexPrince, TexStar, Regal and White Delight that are in full bloom, and some of the other varieties are just beginning to bloom.

All the peach and plum trees have been pruned, and the blackberries have been fertilized. There's plenty of work to be done, including picking up lots of peach & plum tree limbs so we can begin mowing the orchard.

Carole has started making her jellies, and has finished ordering our supplies.

This year we will have an additional 250 feet of blackberry row to pick. As in previous seasons, we will have PYO berries, pre-picked berries, and pre-picked peaches and plums.

Fruit crop updates will be put up on our website:  Huebnerberrypatch.com. Feel free to email or call us for updates or if you have questions. Our farm numbers are: 903-344-1132 and 979-255-3181.

Hopefully by May 1st we will have a better ideal of when we'll open up for berry picking and fruit sales – normally around the end of May or first of June. However, this year could be different.

We saw our first hummer on March 30th … about 2 weeks later than last year.

Enjoy the Spring temperatures and wildflowers … and have a Blessed Easter.
